Introduction / Overview

Peace and Justice Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest too the peacemakers; they shall be called sons of God. You are the light of the world. In the, same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father.

Come join us in our ministry. Be the "light" so others will praise God for the good works you do. We pray, discuss, and work together for peace, justice, and support of the poor, sick, and the jailed. We meet the 3rd Monday @ 7:00 P.M. each month. Any help is appreciated on our projects.

Mission Statement

We believe that as followers of Jesus, we must uphold the dignity of people everywhere, especially those who are poor and oppressed. As his disciples, we will listen to the Spirit who calls us to share our gifts in genuine outreach and service. This includes the constant pursuit of justice and peace on the local, national, and global levels.

We will integrate into action the gospel of Jesus and the social teachings of the Church. We will carry out the activities of this ministry through the work of sub-committees developed to address specific needs of our parish, city, state, nation, and our world.

The mission of the Peace and Justice Ministry includes the following:

  1. To collaborate with the Pastoral Team, Parish Council, and other appropriate parish committees in carrying out the mission of the Peace and Justice Ministry.
  2. To invite all parish members to live out the gospel message of Jesus with emphasis on peace, justice, reconciliation, and love.
  3. To educate all parish members on the gospel message, our Catholic social teachings, and current social justice issues.
  4. To address the needs of the homeless, hungry, naked, and the imprisoned through numerous parish outreach and service programs.
  5. To actively support local, national, and international organizations and programs whose ministries are directed to the human concerns of all people.

Meeting Minutes

St. Joseph Church

Peace and Justice Ministry

Meeting Minutes – March 17, 2008

Opening Prayer: Richard Felix led the prayer service by reading Isaiah 50:4-8

This was followed by reading of "Carrying the Cross" by Richard. Our response to each petition was: "Jesus, grant us strength to carry our cross."

Catholic Harvest Food Pantry: The Hanson’s were not in attendance, so we had no official report on the food pantry. Since we just conducted a bag distribution we assume all is well.

Bread for the World: Pat Workinger, who will be heading up the letter-writing campaign explained the name of the campaign The Global Poverty Act. This is in the Senate now as S 4233.

We then viewed a very interesting 10-minute video about families in Africa, following the story of Catherine, a young girl whose parents died from AIDS. She is being raised by her grandmother. It mentions how she used to have to walk two hours to get the daily water, and because of a pump well nearby she only has to walk about a half hour a day, thus giving her more time to study. Sometimes she doesn’t study because her grandmother can’t afford to buy a candle for her to read by. It certainly made us appreciate our American lifestyle and want to help.

Pat will meet with Fr. Louis when he returns home from his surgery. Hopefully it will be in May, as usual. Everyone was enthused and we will all help to get a record number of letters signed.

Pennies for People: Our container does not seem to have as much money as usual, but we hope to get some last-minute offerings. The money will be taken to Commerce Bank to be counted by them and the funds will be deposited to the church account. Then P&J will hand deliver the check to Bell Socialization Services, and we will get a photo taken and submit it to the Catholic Witness.

ANYONE WHO WANTS TO HELP PUT THE COINS IN LARGE CANS SHOULD MEET IN THE CHURCH LOBBY ON TUESDAY, MARCH 25 AT 1:30 P.M. We will put the coins on a dolly and get to someone’s car to take to the Commerce Bank. The coins are very heavy so we will need people to carry them.

Carnival: Richard will find out the dates of the Carnival and secure a slip for members to sign up to work at the Lemonade and Pretzel Stand. Last year, we did not get the forms in time, but were able to help anyway.

Coming events to take note of:

Compassion York – Sunday, April 6. Meet at 4 p.m. back of school in the church cafeteria to load the food and distribute in the two church parking lots. Notice will appear in the bulletin asking parishioners to help. Carolyn will contact Rose Molinaro to be sure that she will be preparing the hot food.

Hospitality Sunday – June 22 We will be in charge of coffee and donuts at the 8:30 and 10:30 Masses. Jack O’Donnoghue has the list of instructions.

CHFP Distribution of Bags: July 19 and 20th

Pick up of items the next weekend July 26 & 27.

NEXT MEETING MONDAY EVENING, APRIL 21, 2008

7 P.M. PLEASE TRY TO ATTEND AND BRING A FRIEND!!!

Prayers

Peace Prayer

Lord, make me a means of Your peace.
Where there's hatred grown, let me sow Your love.
Where there's injury, Lord, let forgiveness be my sword.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, make me a means of Your peace.
When there's sadness here, let me sow Your joy.
When the darkness nears, may Your light dispel our fears.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, grant me to seek and to share:
To forgive in Thee, You've forgiven me;
For to die in Thee, is eternal life to me.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Jubilee Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Help us to embrace the meaning of Jubilee at its deepest level. Call us to new heights of generosity, goodness, and energy as we prepare to mark the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' birth. Help us to be true to the biblical roots of the Jubilee Year, making it a transforming experience for ourselves and for the human family. For this we pray.

Amen
