WHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN'T LOOKING.....
'When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you
hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately
wanted to paint another one.
When you thought I wasn't looking I saw you feed a stray cat,
and I Iearned that it was good to be kind to animals.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make my favorite
cake for me and I learned that little things can be the special
things in life
When you thought I wasn't looking I heard you say a prayer, and
I knew there is a God I could always talk to and I learned to
trust in God.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you make a meal and
take it to a friend who was sick, and I learned that we all have
to help take care of each other.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you give of your time
and money to help people who had nothing and I learned that
those who have something should give to those who don't.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I felt you kiss me good night
and I felt loved and safe.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw you take care of our
house and everyone in it and, I learned we have to take care of
what we are given.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw how you handled your
responsibilities even when you didn't feel good, and I learned
that I would have to be responsible when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw tears come from your
eyes and I learned that sometimes things hurt, but it's alright
to cry
When you thought I wasn't looking, I saw that you cared and I
wanted to be everything that I could be.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I learned most of life's
lessons that I need to know to be a good and productive person
when I grow up.
When you thought I wasn't looking, I looked at you and wanted to
say, 'Thanks for all the things I saw when you thought I wasn't
looking.'" - anonymous
Last weekI took my children to a restaurant.
My six-year-old son had asked if he could say grace. As we bowed
our heads he said,
"God is good. God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would
even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert.
And Liberty and justice for all, amen."
Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard
a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids
today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice-cream.
Why, I never."
Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it
wrong? Is God mad at me? As I held him and assured him that he
had done a terrific job and God was certainly not mad at him, an
elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my son and
said,
" I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."
"Really?", my son asked. "Cross my heart."Then in a theatrical
whisper he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started
this whole thing), "Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A
little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."
Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal. My
son stared at his for a momentand then did something I will
remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and
without a word walked over and placed it in front of the woman.
With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream
is good for the soul sometimes, and my soul is good already."

A little boy came up to his mother in the
kitchen one evening while she was fixing supper, and he handed
her a piece of paper that he had been writing on. After his mom
dried her hands on an apron, she read it, and this is what it
said:
For cutting the grass: $5.00
For cleaning up my room this week: $1.00
For going to the store for you: .50
Baby sitting my kid brother while you went shopping: .25
Taking out the garbage: $1.00
For getting a good report card: $5.00
For cleaning up and raking the yard: $2.00
Total owed: $14.75
Well, his mother looked at him standing there, and the boy could
see the memories flashing through her mind. She picked up the
pen, urned over the paper he'd written on, and this is what she
wrote:
For the nine months I carried you while you were growing inside
me: No Charge
For all the nights that I've sat up with you, doctored and
prayed for you: No Charge
For all the trying times, and all the tears that you've caused
through the years: No Charge
For all the nights that were filled with dread, and for the
worries I knew were ahead: No Charge
For the toys, food, clothes, and even wiping your nose: No
Charge, son.
When you add it up, the cost of my love is: No Charge. When the
boy finished reading what his mother had written, there were big
tears in his eyes, and he looked straight up at his mother and
said, "Mom, I sure do love you." And then
he took the pen and in great big letters he wrote:
"PAID IN FULL."
Some thoughts on LISTENING
"When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving me advice,
you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I
shouldn't feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me and you feel that you have to do
something to solve my problems, you have failed me, strange as
that may seem.
Listen! All I asked was that you listen, not talk or do, just
hear me.
Advice is cheap:twenty cents will get you both Dear Abby and
Billy Graham in the same newspaper.
And I can do for myself. I'm not helpless. Maybe discouraged and
faltering, but not helpless.
When you do something for me that I can and need to do for
myself, you contribute to my fear and inadequacy.
But, when you accept as a single fact that I do feel what I
feel, no matter how irrational, then I can quit trying to
convince you and get about this business of understanding what's
behind this irrational feeling.
And when that's clear, the answers are obvious and I don't need
advice. Irrational feelings make sense when we understand what's
behind them.
Perhaps that's why prayer works, sometimes, for some people---
because God is mute and doesn't give advice or try to fix
things.
He just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.
So please listen and just hear me
And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn--
And I'll listen to you."
