Introduction / Overview

Peace and Justice Blest are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs. Blest too the peacemakers; they shall be called sons of God. You are the light of the world. In the, same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father.

Come join us in our ministry. Be the "light" so others will praise God for the good works you do. We pray, discuss, and work together for peace, justice, and support of the poor, sick, and the jailed. We meet the 3rd Monday @ 7:00 P.M. each month. Any help is appreciated on our projects.

Mission Statement

We believe that as followers of Jesus, we must uphold the dignity of people everywhere, especially those who are poor and oppressed. As his disciples, we will listen to the Spirit who calls us to share our gifts in genuine outreach and service. This includes the constant pursuit of justice and peace on the local, national, and global levels.

We will integrate into action the gospel of Jesus and the social teachings of the Church. We will carry out the activities of this ministry through the work of sub-committees developed to address specific needs of our parish, city, state, nation, and our world.

The mission of the Peace and Justice Ministry includes the following:

  1. To collaborate with the Pastoral Team, Parish Council, and other appropriate parish committees in carrying out the mission of the Peace and Justice Ministry.
  2. To invite all parish members to live out the gospel message of Jesus with emphasis on peace, justice, reconciliation, and love.
  3. To educate all parish members on the gospel message, our Catholic social teachings, and current social justice issues.
  4. To address the needs of the homeless, hungry, naked, and the imprisoned through numerous parish outreach and service programs.
  5. To actively support local, national, and international organizations and programs whose ministries are directed to the human concerns of all people.

Meeting Minutes

St. Joseph Church

Peace and Justice Ministry

Meeting Minutes – August 18,, 2008

School Supply Collection: We are receiving school supplies every Sunday. August 24 will be the last Sunday. Barb and Delores have been taking the supplies for Catholic Harvest Food Pantry, and Homeless School Children Initiative. They will be sure that the rest of the donated supplies are picked up or taken to the other agencies in time for school.

Catholic Harvest Food Pantry: Jo and Leroy Hanson report that the shelves are a little bare, because it is the end of the fiscal year at the food bank. They are expecting six skids of food for the third Wednesday of the month. They ask for some help to put away the two trucks of supplies. They also reported a record number of people coming in for food. The number of families has increased by 50+ families a month. This is an indication of how even the working poor are being affected by the rise in gas and food prices. There are currently 200+ volunteers at the pantry, so things move along pretty fast when the clients come in for the food.

Advent Giving Tree: We will put up the giving tree on Sat. Nov. 29th. June O’Donnoghue has retired as chair of this project, but will let us use her tree, and will give us any leftover supplies such as tags, bags, etc. We again expect to get a large amount of gifts for the various charities and organizations. We will consider adding Bell Shelter to our list of recipients.

Tree for Joan and Ryan Sattler: Richard composed a beautiful letter to Joan and Ryan announcing the planting of a red oak tree in their honor for all the work done by them in the Peace & Justice Ministry. Along with the letter, we sent along a photo of Barb and Dolores standing by the tree. The tree is located on the left side of the front of the church. The Sattler’s names will be placed on a plaque signifying the donation of the tree in their honor.

CROP WALK: Will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12th beginning at the York Revolutions Baseball Stadium. Registrations at 1 p.m., walk begins at 1:30. A 10K walk will be held on the rail trail down to Regent’s Glen and back, or a shorter walk for those not able to go that distance, around the inside of the stadium. Carolyn will look into getting the kits for walkers to sign up donors. Hopefully we can have a space to hand them out on Sundays. All proceeds from Catholic walkers go to Catholic Relief Services.

Prison Ministry: A meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 26th of a core team interested in helping form this ministry. Attending will be Fr. Robert, Fr. Carl, Kathy Stankoski, Kathy Diehl, Pat Workinger and Richard. The meeting will be held at the church at 7 p.m.

Care to Share: Rene will head up the Care to Share coupons. The coupons are sold for $5 each, the $5 going to P&J. The date to use the Bon Ton coupons is Sat., Nov. 15th. It was voted on and decided unanimously to give all proceeds to the Catholic Harvest Food Pantry.

Other issues: Get articles to Dennis Lawyer for a P&J bulletin insert newsletter. Compassion York Oct. 26th. Distribute bags for CHFP Oct. 18-19 pick up bags on Oct. 25-26.

The meeting was closed with presentation of petitions and the Our Father.

Prayers

Peace Prayer

Lord, make me a means of Your peace.
Where there's hatred grown, let me sow Your love.
Where there's injury, Lord, let forgiveness be my sword.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, make me a means of Your peace.
When there's sadness here, let me sow Your joy.
When the darkness nears, may Your light dispel our fears.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Lord, grant me to seek and to share:
To forgive in Thee, You've forgiven me;
For to die in Thee, is eternal life to me.
Lord, make me a means of Your peace.

Jubilee Prayer

Come, Holy Spirit. Help us to embrace the meaning of Jubilee at its deepest level. Call us to new heights of generosity, goodness, and energy as we prepare to mark the 2000th anniversary of Jesus' birth. Help us to be true to the biblical roots of the Jubilee Year, making it a transforming experience for ourselves and for the human family. For this we pray.

Amen
